Audit Semi-Senior – Birmingham
Birmingham | £35,000–£45,000
Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an Audit Semi-Senior for a full-time opportunity in Birmingham.
This role will suit an ACA or ACCA-qualified accountant with recent audit and accounts experience gained within an accountancy practice who is comfortable leading assignments and supervising junior colleagues.
You’ll take responsibility for planning, completing and supervising audit assignments while supporting Managers and Partners with audit, accounts, compliance and related advisory matters.
The Role
You’ll work across a portfolio of corporate clients, taking audit engagements from planning through to completion while maintaining high professional and technical standards.
The position includes hands-on audit delivery, statutory accounts preparation, risk identification, file completion and client liaison, alongside responsibility for supporting trainees and monitoring assignment progress against agreed budgets and deadlines.
You’ll also identify technical matters and potential opportunities for added-value services, escalating key points to Managers and Partners where appropriate.
Responsibilities
- Plan, complete and supervise audit assignments.
- Deliver audit work at client sites or remotely as required.
- Identify audit risks and technical matters.
- Escalate key issues and completion points appropriately.
- Prepare audit files and working papers.
- Prepare statutory accounts and completion documentation.
- Support higher-level audit, accounts and compliance assignments.
- Liaise directly with clients to obtain information.
- Ask effective questions and resolve audit queries proactively.
- Monitor assignment quality and progress.
- Work within agreed budgets and deadlines.
- Record chargeable time accurately.
- Support appropriate recovery levels.
- Coach and supervise trainees.
- Review junior colleagues’ work.
- Identify matters for Managers or Partners to discuss with clients.
- Highlight opportunities for additional services or added-value advice.
- Finalise documentation for clients and HMRC.
- Deliver ad-hoc projects and assignments.
- Maintain relevant technical knowledge through CPD and training.
About You
You’ll need:
- ACA or ACCA qualification.
- Recent audit and accounts experience within an accountancy practice.
- Experience leading audit assignments.
- Experience supervising junior members of staff.
- Strong audit planning skills.
- Good analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Strong working knowledge of UK auditing standards.
- Good knowledge of financial reporting and accounts preparation.
- Working knowledge of relevant business taxes, particularly Corporation Tax and VAT.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to manage deadlines and work effectively under pressure.
- A professional, organised and proactive approach.
Experience with systems such as Inflo, MWP, Xero or similar audit/cloud-accounting software would be advantageous rather than essential.
What’s on Offer
- £35,000–£45,000 salary confirmed in the supplied role information.
- Responsibility for planning and leading audit assignments.
- Exposure to audit, accounts and wider compliance work.
- Direct client relationship responsibility.
- Junior supervision and coaching experience.
- Opportunities to identify and support wider advisory work.
- Technical development through ongoing training and CPD.
- A role offering meaningful autonomy across assignments.
Why Consider This Role?
Although titled Audit Semi-Senior, this is a role with a significant level of responsibility.
You’ll lead assignments, supervise trainees, manage audit files and deal directly with clients while working closely with Managers and Partners.
It should therefore appeal to a qualified practice accountant who wants a hands-on position with meaningful assignment ownership and continued exposure across audit, accounts and related compliance work.
