Client Manager – Banbury

Banbury | £55,000–£70,000

Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an experienced Client Manager for a full-time opportunity in Banbury.

This is a senior client-facing role for a qualified accountant or tax adviser who enjoys combining portfolio management, technical tax advice and team leadership.

You’ll manage a diverse portfolio of rural clients, overseeing compliance work across accounts, VAT and Self Assessment while delivering bespoke advice across areas including Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Income Tax.

The Role

You’ll take ownership of client relationships and provide both compliance and higher-value advisory support.

The position requires strong technical judgement, with responsibility for reviewing tax computations, identifying complex issues and developing practical solutions tailored to individual clients.

Alongside your portfolio, you’ll manage and develop colleagues, oversee workflow and commercial performance, and contribute to business development and wider practice initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop a portfolio of rural clients.
  • Lead client meetings and maintain strong long-term relationships.
  • Oversee accounts, VAT and Self Assessment compliance.
  • Review and approve technically robust tax computations.
  • Identify complex technical and advisory issues.
  • Develop bespoke tax solutions for clients.
  • Advise on Inheritance Tax.
  • Advise on Capital Gains Tax.
  • Provide Income Tax planning support.
  • Work on Trusts & Estates matters.
  • Support HMRC investigation work where required.
  • Deliver clear technical reports and guidance.
  • Manage and develop junior colleagues.
  • Conduct reviews and provide constructive feedback.
  • Delegate work appropriately.
  • Build a confident and technically capable team.
  • Oversee WIP and billing.
  • Maintain compliance trackers and workflow.
  • Support client onboarding.
  • Drive process efficiency and technology adoption.
  • Monitor recoveries and chargeable output.
  • Identify advisory opportunities with existing and prospective clients.
  • Support Partners on complex client matters.
  • Attend external events and contribute to business development.
  • Collaborate with other teams across the wider practice.

About You

You’ll need:

  • ACA or ACCA qualification and/or CTA qualification.
  • Experience working with a varied client portfolio.
  • Strong technical accounting and tax knowledge.
  • A good understanding of the issues facing rural clients.
  • The ability to deliver bespoke tax solutions.
  • Strong analytical and commercial judgement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building ability.
  • Experience managing and developing colleagues.
  • Confidence working independently and as part of a wider team.
  • A proactive approach to identifying client and business-development opportunities.

Core technical knowledge may include UK GAAP, FRS 105, FRS 102 Section 1A, Income Tax, VAT, IHT, CGT, Trusts & Estates and HMRC investigations.

An existing network of contacts may be useful, but the JD does not make this essential.

What’s on Offer

  • £55,000–£70,000 salary confirmed in the supplied role information.
  • Ownership of a varied rural client portfolio.
  • A blend of accounts, tax compliance and higher-value advisory work.
  • Exposure to complex personal and business tax matters.
  • Team leadership and staff-development responsibility.
  • Commercial ownership of WIP and billing.
  • Business-development exposure.
  • Opportunities to influence workflow, technology and best practice.
  • Significant autonomy in managing clients and technical outcomes.

Why Consider This Role?

This is broader than a traditional accounts-only Client Manager role.

You’ll combine accounts and compliance work with meaningful tax advisory responsibility, while also taking ownership of client relationships, commercial performance and team development.

It should particularly suit an experienced Manager who enjoys working with rural and owner-managed businesses and wants a role where technical advice, client relationships and people leadership carry equal importance.
