Internal Audit Assistant Manager – Belfast
Belfast | £38,000–£46,000 | Hybrid
Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an Internal Audit Assistant Manager for a full-time opportunity in Belfast.
This role will suit an experienced internal or external audit professional who wants to take greater responsibility for risk-focused internal audit assignments, client relationships and junior-team development.
With hybrid working confirmed, you’ll plan and deliver financial, compliance and operational audits, evaluate internal controls and provide practical recommendations that help clients reduce risk and improve operational effectiveness.
The Role
You’ll develop audit plans around client risks and organisational objectives, managing assignments while overseeing and reviewing the work of junior auditors.
A key part of the role involves understanding how client processes and controls operate, identifying weaknesses and translating your findings into clear, practical recommendations.
You’ll also act as an important client contact, communicate findings to stakeholders and contribute to the continued development of the internal audit team.
Responsibilities
- Develop tailored internal audit plans based on risk assessments and client objectives.
- Conduct financial, compliance and operational audits.
- Evaluate internal controls and identify weaknesses or areas of risk.
- Recommend practical improvements to strengthen controls and operational efficiency.
- Prepare clear audit reports covering findings, conclusions and recommendations.
- Build strong client relationships and understand business processes.
- Communicate audit findings effectively to relevant stakeholders.
- Supervise and review the work of junior auditors.
- Mentor junior colleagues and support their professional development.
- Contribute to team training and wider internal audit practice development.
About You
You’ll need:
- A bachelor’s degree at 2:1 or above.
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors or a CCAB-recognised accountancy body such as ICAEW, ACCA or ICAS.
- Proven experience within internal or external audit.
- Strong understanding of internal audit methodology.
- Experience supervising or managing colleagues within an audit environment.
- Knowledge of internal audit standards, principles and best practice.
- Confidence using audit software and relevant tools.
- Good Microsoft Office skills, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Confidence building professional client relationships.
- The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team.
What’s on Offer
- Hybrid working.
- Exposure to financial, compliance and operational internal audits.
- Responsibility for risk assessment and controls reviews.
- Direct client engagement and advisory exposure.
- Junior-team supervision and mentoring responsibility.
- Opportunities to contribute to wider practice development.
- Continued learning and professional development.
Why Consider This Role?
This role offers broader exposure than a purely financial audit position.
You’ll work directly with clients to understand how their organisations operate, assess risk and controls and provide recommendations that can improve both compliance and operational performance.
For an experienced auditor looking to build deeper internal audit, risk and assurance expertise while gaining greater leadership responsibility, it provides a strong next step.
