Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting for an established accountancy practice in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands. The indicative salary is £45,000–£55,000 per annum, based on market research and subject to employer confirmation.

This senior position combines responsibility for workflow, staff supervision and practice efficiency with hands-on accounts and tax work. About this Office & Practice Manager Opportunity in Sutton Coldfield

Working closely with the Director, you will help organise the practice’s daily activities and maintain consistent standards of quality, compliance and client service.

Your responsibilities will span accounts, corporation tax, personal tax, VAT, bookkeeping, payroll, CIS and company secretarial workflow. You will allocate work, monitor progress and resolve obstacles so that assignments move forward and deadlines are met.

Alongside this operational responsibility, you will manage an allocated client portfolio and remain directly involved in preparing, reviewing and discussing client work.

Practice Management Responsibilities

  • Organise day-to-day practice operations and coordinate work across service areas.
  • Allocate assignments, balance workloads and set priorities around client and statutory deadlines.
  • Monitor incomplete work, missing client information and outstanding actions, ensuring appropriate follow-up.
  • Supervise staff, lead workflow discussions and identify performance or development needs.
  • Coordinate holidays, absences and office coverage to maintain adequate resources.
  • Track work in progress, completed assignments and billing across the practice.
  • Oversee client onboarding and the completion of required procedures and documentation.
  • Work with the Director to maintain efficient processes and appropriate standards of client service.

Client Portfolio and Technical Responsibilities

  • Manage an allocated client portfolio from planning and preparation through review, client approval, finalisation and billing.
  • Prepare and review year-end accounts, supporting working papers, management accounts and financial reports where required.
  • Review bookkeeping, bank reconciliations, journals, accruals, prepayments and year-end adjustments.
  • Prepare and review VAT returns and work relating to Making Tax Digital, including Income Tax requirements.
  • Prepare and review Self Assessment returns, corporation tax computations and returns, and CIS returns where applicable.
  • Liaise with HMRC, Companies House, pension providers and other external organisations on clients’ behalf.
  • Provide practical accounting and tax advice, identifying additional support that may benefit clients.

Client Meetings and Assignment Finalisation

You will conduct accounts clearance meetings for clients within your portfolio, explaining business performance, the tax position and significant matters arising from the work.

When the Director leads a meeting, you will ensure the file has been reviewed and prepare a concise briefing covering significant movements, unusual items, tax liabilities and outstanding questions.

You will also resolve queries before meetings wherever possible, record agreed actions and ensure amendments are completed promptly so assignments can be finalised.

About You

Substantial experience in a senior management role within a UK accountancy practice is essential.

You should bring:

  • Strong technical experience in accounts preparation, review and related tax compliance.
  • The ability to coordinate practice-wide workflow while managing your own client portfolio.
  • Experience supervising staff, allocating work and supporting development.
  • Confidence conducting client meetings and explaining accounting and taxation matters clearly.
  • An organised approach to deadlines, outstanding queries and competing priorities.
  • An understanding of work in progress, billing and resource planning.
  • Sound judgement about matters requiring the Director’s input.
  • A commitment to accurate work, appropriate compliance and dependable client service.

ACA or ACCA qualification would be relevant, but the supplied requirements do not make either qualification mandatory.

Salary and Working Arrangements

Indicative salary: £45,000–£55,000 per annum, based on market research. The employer’s salary range is to be confirmed.
