Garry Howling Recruitment

Lead and grow a substantial client portfolio, develop high-performing teams and influence strategy in a commercially focused General Practice Partner opportunity.

Partner – Brighton

Brighton | £90,000–£120,000 | Hybrid

Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an experienced General Practice Partner, or an established Director ready to take the next step, for a senior leadership opportunity in Brighton.

This is a broad, commercially focused role for an ACA or ACCA-qualified accountancy professional with significant leadership experience and a strong background in general practice.

While the primary technical specialism is accounts preparation, you’ll also bring previous exposure to audit and tax and the commercial judgement required to advise technically complex clients, grow relationships and contribute directly to the continued development of the practice.

With hybrid working confirmed, the position combines client leadership, people development, business development and financial responsibility.

The Opportunity

You’ll take ownership of a diverse client portfolio, including larger and technically complex businesses, acting as a trusted adviser and ensuring clients receive commercially relevant support.

The role goes significantly beyond technical delivery. You’ll be responsible for developing new opportunities, strengthening professional relationships, managing commercial performance and helping shape strategic initiatives across the business.

You’ll also lead and mentor teams, creating an environment in which people can perform, develop and progress.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, develop and grow a diverse portfolio of clients.
  • Advise larger and technically complex clients.
  • Act as a trusted business adviser.
  • Deliver commercially focused and innovative client solutions.
  • Maintain high standards of service delivery and risk management.
  • Support the effective adoption of digital tools.
  • Lead, inspire and mentor high-performing teams.
  • Develop colleagues and encourage a collaborative working culture.
  • Lead business-development activity.
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of opportunities.
  • Promote collaboration across different service lines.
  • Develop professional networks and strengthen client relationships.
  • Contribute to strategic growth initiatives.
  • Ensure work is appropriately priced and margins are maintained.
  • Take ownership of WIP, fees and lock-up targets across your portfolio and team.

About You

You’ll need:

  • ACA or ACCA qualification.
  • Significant senior leadership experience within accountancy practice.
  • Strong general practice experience.
  • A primary technical strength in accounts preparation.
  • Previous exposure to audit and tax.
  • Proven experience managing and developing a substantial client portfolio.
  • A strong record of business development and relationship management.
  • Experience leading and inspiring teams.
  • Strong commercial and strategic judgement.
  • Confidence managing pricing, profitability and wider commercial performance.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability.
  • A proactive and results-oriented approach.

Experience operating within a matrix structure or medium-sized organisation would be advantageous.

What’s on Offer

  • Hybrid working.
  • A genuine Partner-level leadership position.
  • Scope for an established Director to step into partnership.
  • Ownership of a varied and technically interesting client portfolio.
  • Significant influence over business development and practice growth.
  • Commercial responsibility for pricing, margins, WIP and fees.
  • Leadership and development of high-performing teams.
  • The opportunity to shape wider strategic initiatives.

Why Consider This Role?

This opportunity should appeal to someone who wants real commercial and strategic ownership, rather than a senior title centred primarily on technical delivery.

You’ll influence clients, people and financial performance, with responsibility for developing a portfolio and generating new opportunities while remaining close enough to client work to act as a genuine business adviser.

For an established Director, it also provides a clear opportunity to make the move into a Partner role without needing to wait for an internal succession opportunity.
