Personal Tax Manager – Birmingham

Birmingham | £55,000–£75,000

Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an experienced Personal Tax Manager for a full-time opportunity in Birmingham.

This is a senior private-client role for a technically strong tax professional who enjoys combining portfolio ownership, bespoke advisory work and team leadership.

You’ll manage a diverse portfolio of personal tax clients, providing both ongoing compliance support and tailored advice across areas including Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Income Tax, international tax and residency matters.

The Role

You’ll take responsibility for developing and delivering a high-quality personal tax service across your own client portfolio.

The role goes beyond compliance. You’ll identify technical issues, develop bespoke solutions and lead client relationships on more complex and one-off advisory assignments.

Alongside your client work, you’ll manage and develop colleagues, oversee workflow and commercial performance, and contribute to business development and wider practice initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a varied portfolio of personal tax clients.
  • Lead client meetings and maintain strong long-term relationships.
  • Review and approve technically robust tax computations.
  • Identify complex technical issues.
  • Deliver bespoke personal tax advisory solutions.
  • Advise on Inheritance Tax.
  • Advise on Capital Gains Tax.
  • Provide Income Tax planning advice.
  • Support international tax matters.
  • Advise on residency status.
  • Work on Trusts & Estates matters.
  • Support HMRC investigation work where required.
  • Prepare clear technical reports and guidance.
  • Manage and develop junior colleagues.
  • Conduct reviews and provide constructive feedback.
  • Delegate work appropriately.
  • Build a confident and technically capable team.
  • Oversee WIP and billing.
  • Maintain compliance trackers and workflow.
  • Support client onboarding.
  • Drive process efficiency and appropriate technology adoption.
  • Monitor recoveries and chargeable output.
  • Identify advisory opportunities within existing and prospective clients.
  • Support Partners on complex client matters.
  • Attend external events and contribute to business development.
  • Collaborate with other teams across the practice.

About You

You’ll need:

  • ACA or ACCA qualification and/or CTA qualification.
  • Experience working in a personal-tax-focused environment.
  • Exposure to a varied private-client portfolio.
  • Strong personal tax technical knowledge.
  • An understanding of the issues affecting private clients.
  • The ability to develop practical, bespoke tax solutions.
  • Strong analytical and commercial judgement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience managing or developing colleagues.
  • Confidence working independently and collaboratively.
  • A proactive approach to identifying advisory and business-development opportunities.

An established regional network may be useful, but the JD does not make this essential.

What’s on Offer

  • £55,000–£75,000 salary confirmed in the supplied role information.
  • Ownership of a varied private-client portfolio.
  • A combination of compliance and complex advisory work.
  • Exposure across IHT, CGT, Income Tax, international tax and residency.
  • Trusts & Estates and HMRC investigation exposure.
  • Team leadership and staff-development responsibility.
  • Commercial ownership of WIP and billing.
  • Business-development opportunities.
  • Scope to influence workflow, technology and wider best practice.

Why Consider This Role?

This is a broad private-client leadership and advisory position, rather than a Personal Tax Manager role focused mainly on annual compliance.

You’ll combine technical tax work with client ownership, commercial responsibility, people development and business development.

It should particularly suit an experienced Manager who wants to remain technically involved while having wider influence over client relationships and the development of the personal tax service.
