Manage a varied client portfolio across accounts, tax and VAT while providing practical business support and helping develop more junior members of the team.
Senior Accountant – Solihull
Solihull | £36,000–£44,000
Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an experienced Senior Accountant for a full-time, office-based opportunity in Solihull.
This role will suit an accountant with at least three years’ UK practice experience who is ready to take greater ownership of both technical work and client relationships.
You’ll manage a varied portfolio, preparing and reviewing management and statutory accounts, supporting corporation and personal tax compliance, dealing with VAT and providing practical support to clients across their wider business needs.
The Role
You’ll take responsibility for delivering high-quality accounts and tax work across your own client portfolio, ensuring deadlines are met and assignments are completed accurately.
The role also provides broader exposure beyond year-end compliance. You’ll support Managers and Directors on tax planning and advisory work, assist with cash-flow forecasting and basic business-planning assignments, and help mentor junior colleagues.
It offers a good balance between hands-on technical work, client management and developing leadership responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review statutory accounts.
- Produce management accounts for a varied client portfolio.
- Assist with corporation tax compliance.
- Support personal tax compliance work.
- Prepare and review VAT returns.
- Liaise directly with clients to obtain records and resolve queries.
- Build strong ongoing client relationships.
- Support Managers and Directors with tax planning and advisory assignments.
- Assist with cash-flow forecasting.
- Support basic business-planning work.
- Ensure assignments meet relevant deadlines and regulatory requirements.
- Review and support the work of junior colleagues where appropriate.
- Mentor junior team members and help develop their technical capability.
- Use IRIS or similar accountancy software effectively.
- Contribute to wider client delivery and practice growth.
About You
You’ll need:
- At least three years’ UK accountancy-practice experience.
- Part-qualified or qualified ACCA/ICAEW status, or an equivalent background.
- Strong accounts-preparation knowledge.
- Good understanding of basic corporation and personal tax compliance.
- Practical VAT and HMRC knowledge.
- Experience using IRIS or similar accountancy software.
- Strong client communication and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good organisation and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- A proactive approach to learning and development.
- Confidence supporting and guiding junior colleagues.
- Commercial awareness and a practical problem-solving mindset.
What’s on Offer
- Ownership of a varied client portfolio.
- Exposure to both statutory and management accounts.
- Corporation tax, personal tax and VAT work.
- Client advisory and business-planning exposure.
- Direct client relationship responsibility.
- Junior mentoring and development experience.
- Close working relationships with Managers and Directors.
- Scope to continue developing technical, commercial and leadership skills.
Why Consider This Role?
This role offers broader responsibility than a Senior Accountant position focused purely on accounts preparation.
You’ll manage your own clients, support tax and advisory work and gain greater involvement in mentoring junior colleagues, while remaining hands-on with the core technical work.
It should particularly suit an experienced practice accountant who wants to broaden their client, commercial and leadership responsibility without needing to wait until they are fully qualified.
