Tax Director – Leeds

Leeds | £80,000–£100,000 | Hybrid

Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an experienced Tax Director for a full-time advisory opportunity in Leeds.

This is a senior role for a commercially minded tax professional who wants to combine complex advisory work with client leadership, people development and practice growth.

With hybrid working confirmed, you’ll manage a varied portfolio of tax advisory assignments and work closely with clients on matters including succession planning, business sales and acquisitions, share schemes and group restructuring.

The Opportunity

You’ll act as the main point of contact for key advisory clients, ensuring projects are delivered to a high technical standard while providing practical, commercially focused advice.

Alongside leading assignments, you’ll review technical work, manage portfolio performance and support the development of junior colleagues from trainee through to Senior level.

You’ll also play an active part in business development and collaborate across Audit, Corporate Finance, Financial Planning and other specialist teams to deliver broader solutions for clients.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a portfolio of tax advisory projects.
  • Act as the principal contact for key clients.
  • Provide proactive tax-planning advice.
  • Advise on succession planning.
  • Support business sales and acquisitions.
  • Advise on share schemes.
  • Lead group restructuring assignments.
  • Review tax advisory reports and technical work.
  • Maintain strong, long-term client relationships.
  • Manage fee negotiations, billing and WIP.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues from Tax Trainee through to Senior level.
  • Develop junior colleagues’ technical and professional skills.
  • Work collaboratively across other service lines.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce clients to Audit, Corporate Finance, Financial Planning and wider advisory services.
  • Keep up to date with changes in tax legislation.
  • Write technical articles and contribute to presentations.
  • Participate in networking and wider practice-development activity.
  • Support process improvements and continued service development.

About You

You’ll need:

  • ACA and/or CTA qualification, or appropriate qualified-by-experience status.
  • Previous Corporate Tax or Mixed Tax experience within professional practice.
  • Strong technical tax knowledge.
  • Confidence researching and interpreting complex tax legislation.
  • Proven client relationship and advisory skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building ability.
  • Good organisation and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Previous line-management or supervisory experience.
  • A genuine interest in coaching and developing junior colleagues.
  • A proactive and commercially focused approach to client service.

Experience across a broader range of taxes would be advantageous but is not essential.

What’s on Offer

  • Hybrid working.
  • Director-level responsibility for complex tax advisory assignments.
  • Exposure to succession, transactions, share schemes and restructuring.
  • Senior client relationship ownership.
  • Commercial responsibility for WIP, fees and billing.
  • Team coaching and development.
  • Close collaboration across specialist service lines.
  • Business-development, networking and thought-leadership exposure.
  • Scope to influence the continued development of the tax advisory offering.

Why Consider This Role?

This role offers a strong combination of technical advisory depth, client leadership and commercial responsibility.

You’ll remain closely involved in complex tax work while having meaningful influence over clients, people and wider practice growth.

It should particularly suit an established Senior Manager or Director looking for broader responsibility and visibility without moving away from hands-on advisory work.
