Tax Manager – Hexham
Hexham | £50,000–£60,000
Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an experienced Tax Manager for a full-time Private Client Tax opportunity in Hexham.
This is a broad Manager-level role combining responsibility for a private client portfolio with meaningful exposure to complex advisory work.
You’ll act as the principal Manager contact for your clients, oversee personal tax compliance and advise high-net-worth individuals and owner-managed businesses on matters including estate planning, trusts, international tax and family-business succession.
The Opportunity
You’ll manage the day-to-day delivery of a Private Client Tax portfolio while working closely with senior colleagues and specialists across the wider practice.
Although personal tax compliance forms an important part of the role, there is substantial scope to lead and support advisory assignments, identify planning opportunities and provide commercially focused guidance.
You’ll also have responsibility for developing team members and managing the commercial aspects of client work, including fee quotations, budgets, recoveries and billing.
Responsibilities
- Act as the principal Manager contact for a portfolio of Private Client Tax clients.
- Review personal tax compliance work across the portfolio.
- Manage the successful delivery of personal tax compliance assignments.
- Identify tax-planning opportunities and provide practical commercial advice.
- Advise high-net-worth individuals and owner-managed businesses.
- Support residence and domicile matters.
- Advise clients moving to or leaving the UK.
- Support planning around the long-term residence regime.
- Advise on UK and offshore trust structures.
- Support international tax planning for clients with cross-border interests.
- Advise on double-taxation treaties and foreign tax credits.
- Deliver estate and Inheritance Tax planning.
- Support efficient intergenerational wealth transfer.
- Work with clients’ financial advisers on wealth-preservation strategies.
- Advise family businesses on tax-efficient extraction, succession and governance.
- Coordinate client work with colleagues across other departments.
- Develop new client relationships and contribute to business development.
- Mentor and develop members of the Private Client Tax team.
- Support training, development reviews and performance improvement.
- Manage fee quotations, budgets, recoveries and billing.
- Identify and mitigate tax risks while maintaining professional standards.
About You
You’ll need:
- Proven experience in a Private Client Tax managerial role.
- ACA, ACCA, CTA or an equivalent relevant professional qualification.
- Strong knowledge of personal tax compliance.
- A demonstrable track record in Private Client Tax advisory work.
- Experience managing client relationships and leading projects.
- Strong technical and analytical ability.
- Commercial awareness and experience managing the financial aspects of client work.
- Leadership experience, including developing and mentoring colleagues.
- Confidence managing multiple priorities.
- A collaborative and solutions-focused approach.
Experience within a larger professional-services environment would be advantageous, although the fundamental requirement is strong Private Client Tax management and advisory experience.
The JD also specifies proficiency with CCH and tax research platforms such as Croner-i or LexisNexis.
What’s on Offer
- Ownership of a varied Private Client Tax portfolio.
- Exposure to HNW individuals and owner-managed businesses.
- Advisory work alongside substantial compliance responsibility.
- Complex estate, trust and succession-planning exposure.
- International and cross-border private client work.
- Team leadership and mentoring responsibility.
- Commercial responsibility for budgets, recoveries and billing.
- Opportunities to contribute to business development and practice growth.
Why Consider This Role?
The breadth of the private client work is a key attraction.
Alongside managing a substantial compliance portfolio, you’ll advise on issues affecting wealth, international clients, trusts, estates and family businesses, giving you scope to deepen both your technical and commercial advisory experience.
It should particularly suit an established Private Client Tax Manager looking for broader advisory, leadership and client responsibility while remaining hands-on with complex work.
