Tax Senior – Durham

Garry Howling Recruitment is recruiting an experienced Tax Senior for a full-time, office-based opportunity in Durham.

This role will suit a personal tax professional who enjoys managing varied client work and wants exposure beyond straightforward Self Assessment compliance.

You’ll work with clients ranging from sole traders through to directors of owner-managed businesses, with opportunities to support more complex individuals and contribute to wider tax queries and advisory projects.

The Role

You’ll prepare and manage personal tax work across a varied client portfolio, ensuring returns and associated calculations are completed accurately and efficiently.

The role includes regular communication with clients, HMRC and colleagues across other departments, as well as exposure to Capital Gains Tax, benefits in kind and PAYE Settlement Agreements.

Depending on your existing experience, there is also scope to contribute to broader owner-managed business advisory matters.

Responsibilities

• Prepare Self Assessment personal tax returns.
• Prepare P11D forms.
• Advise on benefits in kind.
• Prepare PAYE Settlement Agreements.
• Prepare Capital Gains Tax computations.
• Complete in-year CGT returns relating to UK property.
• Liaise with clients and HMRC by telephone, email and in writing.
• Work with colleagues across other service lines.
• Assist with ad-hoc tax queries and projects.
• Support and coach junior members of the team where required.

About You

You’ll need:

• ATT qualification, part-qualification or relevant qualified-by-experience status.
• Previous experience in a similar personal tax role.
• Strong technical knowledge of personal tax.
• Good understanding of partnership taxation.
• Experience preparing and advising on Capital Gains Tax matters.
• Confidence communicating with clients and HMRC.
• Experience coaching or training junior colleagues.
• Strong organisation and attention to detail.

Experience using CCH would be useful but is not essential, as training and support can be provided.

Broader advisory knowledge across owner-managed businesses, including IHT, CGT, Income Tax and Company Tax, would also be beneficial but is specifically stated as preferred rather than essential.
